The Printing Room

An experimental and art writing journal launching in Sandwell and the wider Black Country, initiated as part of our artist development programme BCN. With new writing commissions each year that give emerging artists time to develop their writing practice with editorial support. Artists are invited to include visual content as part of their pieces and the journal is published in print under Multistory Editions, with local arts printer Holodeck.

Issue 1

This year we commissioned 7 artists to write on the Black Country as place for the journal’s inaugural issue. Writers are exploring the Black Country’s stories and socio-political conditions, and their own experiences of forging an arts practice (most through non-traditional routes), within an area that has historically been underfunded. We have programmed a workshop led by Maria Fusco for the writers, focussing on art writing and critical auto-theory / fiction. Issue 1 will be published in winter 2023.

The artists are: Marley Starskey Butler, Polly Brant, Amelia Fox, Neoliberalizard, Rupinder Kaur Waraich, Rachel Magdeburg and Leah Hickey.
