Journal Launch: From Where I Speak, The Printing Room Issue 1

Thursday 11 July, 6-8pm, Lightwoods House

Join us as we celebrate the launch of From Where I Speak, the first issue of The Printing Room, a new yearly journal that publishes art writing from Sandwell and the Black Country. The launch is a chance to pick up your own copy of the journal, as well as an opportunity to hear the artists read from their pieces, and meet other creatives in your local community.

The Printing Room is published as part of Multistory’s artist development programme BCN, and provides commissions for local emerging artists to experiment with their writing. Seven artists were commissioned to write pieces for this inaugural issue; Marley Starskey Butler, Polly Brant, Amelia Fox, Neoliberalizard, Rupinder Kaur Waraich, Rachel Magdeburg and Leah Hickey. Writers the Black Country’s stories and socio-political conditions, canal walls and underpasses, green spaces, its dialect and interconnected, supportive communities, and reflect on forging of a practice via alternative means, through spirituality, walking or gleaning. The programme was supported through a workshop led by Maria Fusco for the group, focussing on art writing and critical auto-theory / fiction. The Printing Room Journal is designed and printed by The Holodeck, a printmaking and design studio founded in 2013 in Birmingham, specialising in Risograph, Letterpress, and traditional printmaking techniques.

The event will feature short readings from Polly Brant, Marley Starskey Butler, Leah Hickey, Rachel Magdeburg, Neoliberalizard and Rupinder Kaur Waraich.

It was set up to provide artists in the local area opportunities for critical engagement and collaboration outside of formal arts education. The BCN programme informs, and is informed by, Multistory’s wider arts programme that is produced with and by artists and communities living in Sandwell.
