For our second upcoming commission we’re working with West Midlands based artist and documentary photographer Alison Baskerville, who is a current resident artist at @granduniongallery studios based in Birmingham. ⁣ ⁣ As a female former-soldier-turned-artist, Alison has a rare insight into gender and conflict. She has a desire and capacity to make exciting and creative work that reflects on important contemporary issues such as gender equality, military occupation, female identity in the forces, and the long-term consequences of armed conflict. Alison also consults as a high risk safety trainer and runs personal safety and emotional resilience training for freelance photographers. She is the founder of the safety training movement @__roaaar and co-founded Powering the Matriarchy Together (P.M.T), Birmingham’s pioneering festival celebrating women – cis, trans or femmes and non-binary people. She is also the recent recipient of a Developing Your Creative Practice grant from Arts Council England to explore film processes and photographic-based research and create a safe place for researching personal memories and archives which will require reflection on her military past to enable her journey as a more critically engaged artist. @alisonbaskerville⁣ ⁣ ROAAAR is a personal safety initiative which provides training and connects other aspects which effect both our physical and mental wellbeing. The course explores personal safety measures for women (cis, trans or femmes) and provides practical skills to develop your own personal tool kit, allowing attendees to feel safe. Alison’s project ROAAAR will inform her commission with Multistory.⁣ ⁣ Images from ROAAAR sessions & P.M.T event in Birmingham. British Journal of Photography have published an article on Laura Pannack’s commission ‘The Cracker’, you can read it on her project page on our website. ⁣ ⁣ ‘The Cracker is an exploration of the lives of a small group of kids and teenagers who meet and socialise on that very stretch of grass set between two estates in Tipton, nicknamed Tibby and The Lost City. “That’s so poetic!” Pannack enthuses. “Where’s The Lost City? Why is it called The Lost City?’ [I found out that] it had actually been named The Lost City by the residents, because they felt forgotten, they felt lost.”’⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #laurapannack #Blastphotofest2019 #ambitionsforexcellence #artsfestival #community #sandwell #britishjournalofphotography #artscouncilengland #community #tipton #commonspace #greenspaces

“A vast wasteland stands between the two estates. ‘Tibby’ ; its cul de sac of residential houses that curls around a small playground. Kids push prams or zip past on bikes, with their hands above their heads.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Through a narrow alleyway you enter the Cracker; rolling grass lined with blackberries and stinging nettles. Motorbikes, peds and quads bark loudly everyday and at all times. The boys race them until they burn out, perfecting the art of the wheelie. Horses are usually kept in the back gardens or local stables and are just as popular.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The girls nestle around small fires despite the baking summer sun. On my second trip I discovered an entirely black Cracker, sporting the occasional patch of grass that had escaped a burning.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ On the adjacent side lies ‘The Lost City Estate’. Most of the boys meet at Jack Barrett’s bars (a metal fence that lies to the opening of the field). They perch and exchange stories, cigarettes and zoots alight referring to each other affectionately as ‘Mush’.”⁣ – Laura Pannack⁣ ⁣ Head over to @magentafoundation to see more posts from @laurapannack ‘s takeover.⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣ #laurapannack #Blastphotofest2019 #ambitionsforexcellence #artsfestival #community #sandwell #magentafoundation #instagramtakeover #artscouncilengland #community #tipton #commonspace #snakesofinstagram
