This body of work is a portrait of Central and Eastern European communities living in Sandwell, home to the biggest Polish population in the UK. Above geopolitical division, and rhetoric fuelled by media following the EU referendum of 2016, this series of photographs, spanning two years, looks at people living in the local area who have welcomed us in to their lives, teaching us about their history, their identity looking to the future, and what binds a community to make somewhere home. . So many discussions led back to nature. Sights and smells that evoke nostalgia, remind you of somewhere when you were a kid, or provide the comfort of familiarity. In Slovakia before moving to Sandwell, Jan and Ivana would go foraging in the woods – so it seemed an obvious place to make some pictures. @jon_tonks . . . . . . #jontonks #multistory #sandwell #blastphotofest2019 #portraitphotography #documentaryphotography #filmphotography #portrait #acemidlands #ambitionforexcellence #sandwellcouncil #photography #community #artsfestival

Bethany Kane is an independent curator, photographer, Founder of Lost Generation Projects and Programme Coordinator of @formatfestival. Her project ‘Lost Generation IV’ was commissioned as part of the Forge Artist Open Call Programme, which invited 12 West Midlands artists and curators to make new bodies of work for Blast! Festival and take part in a mentorship programme. . ‘Lost Generation IV’ explores contemporary youth culture and the political animosity amongst the younger generation within West Bromwich. @beth_kane_ is interested in developing work with those who fit within the demographic known as ‘Generation Z’. For this edition of Lost Generation, Beth has collaborated with three students from Sandwell College (Miles, Tyler and Zac) encouraging them to use photography to explore their feelings towards current society and politics: from the uncertainty of Brexit to the dominance of social media; the ever-increasing cost of living and the rise in university fees; to the fear of the effect of developing technologies on today’s jobs market. . ‘Lost Generation IV’ provokes discussion and debate on what the future may hold for young men in West Bromwich, Britain and beyond. . . . . . #bethanykane #FORGEartist #MultistoryArtist #multistory #sandwell #sandwellcouncil #ambitionforexcellence #photography #followfriday #followfriday #formatfestival #FORMAT19 #blastphotofest2019 #lostgenerationbrum

My favourite shot from the Lawns. It was the last time it was hot enough to bring the horses out. As they attached the cart the group dived into some sweets and I spotted Lewis’s brother for the first time. His little cheeky face and inventive bike attachment made a magical combo. . . This is @laurapannack on day 3 of my Instagram takeover. My project The Cracker, commissioned by Multistory, will be exhibited as part of #blastphotofest2019 in May/June 2019. . . #blastphotofest2019 #laurapannack #multistory #acemidlands #ambitionforexcellence #thecracker #sandwellcouncil #tipton #sandwell #teenagers #photography #community #artsfestival

This was one of the first times I visited the cracker. The charcoaled bushes against the lush wilderness was a dream. I remember sitting on a step in the unusual baking heat wondering if the group would show. Just as I was about to give up I saw them walking towards me from the City side. Callum kept us entertained with this infectious charm and humour. . . . This is @laurapannack on day 2 of my Multistory takeover.
