We’re excited to share with you an image from photographer @niallmcdiarmid from his series of #Sandwell portraits commissioned by #Multistory for Blast! Festival. The work will be exhibited next year as part of the #BlastPhotoFest2019 shown across the 6 #Sandwell towns. . . “I’ve really enjoyed getting started on my Multistory project and have been travelling across the region regularly over the past month. The basis of the series is to build a portrait of the six towns across Sandwell, photographing the people I meet in my own style. The area is ethnically very diverse so I’m enjoying meeting people from a huge variety of backgrounds. However at the same time not only is it physically in the centre of the country but it seems to be right at the heart of the contemporary England, mirroring many of the changes and challenges that are so regularly discussed. High points so far – the great market at Blackheath, jumping on buses out of Oldham, walking the canals around Tipton, a great coffee morning at West Smethwick Baptist Church on the way to visiting Marshall Street where Malcom X visited in 1965. I even met people who were living on the street when he visited. Lastly I love the John Taylor Duce building in Wednesbury. I’d like to find out more about that. Very intriguing building. Low points so far – the seats on the tram..so uncomfortable. I’m starting a one man campaign for cushions to be supplied!” Niall, July 2018 . . This is @corinnenoordenbos taking over the #Multistory Instagram to highlight the launch of my book and exhibition Black Country Lungs. This is Janice. She suffers from #COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). When Multistory invited me to the Black Country, I took the opportunity to explore health issues. Statistics showed that this post- industrial community has more health-related problems than other areas of the UK. I decided to focus on COPD and lung problems. I was curious about the connection between the Black Country and ‘black lungs’. . . The exhibition is now on show @lightwoodshouse until 31 May 2018. The book can be purchased from the Multistory shop. . . #WorldPoetryDay – we’ll be working with performance poet #EmmaPurshouse on a commission for 18/19 called #TiptonTales Emma will work with local residents to produce a site-specific piece of spoken word theatre with a loose but coherent narrative that will be set and performed in a building / location in #Tipton (one of the six towns in the borough of Sandwell). The history of the building and the people and families who inhabited or frequented the place will be represented as spoken word pieces linked together to represent the diversity of voices in #Sandwell – they will be created by both Emma and artists she collaborates with. Collaboration is one of Emma’s preferred methods of working and she has previously written and performed pieces in this way, including a show which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018. . . . . #spokenword #performancepoet #MultistoryArtist #participation #collaboration #community #connected #communitystories #TheMultistoryCollection #6townsofSandwell
