Hans Eijkelboom’s The Street & Modern Life
For his Black Country Stories commission, Hans Eijkelboom focused his attention on the streets of Birmingham, and particularly on people in the city’s shopping centre.
The resulting images are arranged into groups demarcated by formal similarities where very different people are united by their gestures, clothes or accessories. The work celebrates the city’s social and cultural diversity.
His work reflects on a society in which we, as consumers, may appear to have more freedom to buy whatever we want, but inevitably become part of a society dominated by commercial interests which aim at predictability and standardisation.
Multistory and Hans Eijkelboom have produced a photography book in partnership with Dewi Lewis Publishing. The book is available to purchase here.
