Interview with AiR Courtenay Welcome

Posted

We are delighted to have Courtenay Welcome as one of the artists part of BCN's 2024-25 Residency Programme. Below you can read a short interview with the artist detailing their plans, inspirations and advice!

Multistory: What are your plans for your residency?

Courtenay: I plan on building on a body of research that informs the art making process. This will be informed by exploring the unknown, critically analysing and playfully exploring the immediate landscape of Wolverhampton. Drawing from Stuart Hall's Encoding/Decoding model of communication which will later inform how marks are made and installations are built in space. I’ll also use this time to gauge a better understanding of concepts explored within [the blk arts group] I believe this act will weave new histories into the fabric of my practice.

Multistory: What is influencing your work currently?

Courtenay: My influence during the residency will be found though my presence in Wolverhampton's landscape, the slow walks, the things that catch my attention. Through these findings I’ll be projecting my external influences of

onto the artworks.

Multistory: Your work incorporates a variety of mediums. Is there a particular medium you enjoy working with and why?

Courtenay: I love clay's relationship with my hands, I’m able to manipulate the material in real time in sync with my imagination. I’m searching for answers in this process that inform how the installations occupy [space+time]. Installation allows me the freedom to explore how both painting and sculpture can become one.

Multistory: What would you say to those living in Sandwell/the wider Black Country area/ Birmingham who are interested in becoming an artist?

Courtenay: I’d say take the leap, you have nothing to lose! Get out and network, meet people organically and stay curious. Attend music events and exhibition openings, find communities of artists and submerge yourself in the world of art. The West Midlands is incredibly rich in arts and culture.

I’m big on solo dates, take yourself out with art materials and play/explore - you can learn so much about yourself as an artist in this process.

Dive into podcasts and artist interviews, these are grounding factors for me when the art world feels un-accessible.

This interview took place on 11 November, 2024 and we would like to thank Courtenay for their time. We can't wait to see how they get on!!
