As part of the BCN Residency Programme 2023/24, Chantal Pitts, one of the artist’s in residence during October 2024, was interviewed by Multistory. Read the interview in full below.
Multistory: What are you up to for your BCN residency?
Chantal: I want to explore printing onto wood, metalworking, sculpture and assemblage, looking at combining different materials with wood and furniture to tell a story. I have used hypnotherapy as part of my developmental process. I want to explore self-hypnosis to access the subconscious creative connections.
Multistory: What got you into art and furniture making?
Chantal: I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't exploring art and creativity. I have always been an artist. The design and production of sculptural furniture is an artistic process for me, and second hand furniture is a medium.
Multistory: What is an important influence on your practice right now?
Chantal: Louise Bourgeois' work is inspiring in the way she responds to her lived experiences in honest and raw ways. As Louise Bourgeois was, I am also interested in self exploration, self discovery, art as catharsis and healing. Hypnotherapy/self-hypnosis allows me to connect with myself in a deep and honest way .
This interview took place on 27 September, 2024. Find Chantal Pitts via her website and on Instagram.
