Festival will come to a close, and @the_caravan_gallery are throwing a party to celebrate the culmination of a fantastic collection of photos, stories and objects that make up their Sandwell Pride of Place Project exhibition, donated by the local community over the last six weeks. . Last week at Blast! Festival we focused on #Smethwick – highlights included collaborating with @mothershipprojects to organise an event that celebrated the fantastic designs made by women from MARKit. Keep an eye out for more of their wonderful projects to come! . @jaskirtboora, @brian.homer and @niallmcdiarmid talked about their approach to photographic portraiture with @euripides_altintzoglou at Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery, while Soundkitchen led a sound walk across Smethwick, and Janine Wiedel spoke about her work with Craig Ashley at a screening of ‘Camera in the Streets’. @jaskirtboora launched her project ‘Mitti Di Kushboo – The Smell of the Land’ at @lightwoods_house_and_park on a wonderfully warm and sunny evening. . At the weekend, Billy Dosanjh launched his project “The Exiles”, alongside the publication & related exhibition “Black Country Sikhs” at Smethwick Heritage Centre. This Wednesday from 6 to 8pm join @dawinderbansal ‘in conversation’ with a dynamic guest panel of South Asian women who are passionate about cars, driving and influencing social change for South Asian girls and women in the UK and India. . . The ‘in conversation’ guests include the following: · Anita Goyal, the CEO and Trustee of the Hemraj Goyal Foundation and a Patron of BINTI International and Honorary Chair of the FGM Appeal for Barnardo’s in the UK. In April 2019, Anita joined Manjit Gill, BINTI CEO, on a rally around India, distributing menstrual products and educating young girls about periods. · Bharulata Patel-Kamble, the first woman in the world to drive solo through the Arctic Circle and 32 countries combined and the first Indian women to hoist the flag of India in the Arctic Circle. · Jagdish Khaira has been a pharmacist for 40 years and has been based in West Bromwich for 30 years. Last night photographer @jaskirtboora gave a talk about her approach to portrait photography at the Five Decades of Self Portrait panel discussion, and about her exhibition ‘Mitti Di Khushboo – The Smell of the Land’, which archives her family’s experiences of migrating to England in the late 1970s through portraiture and handwritten stories. . Join us tonight from 6 – 8PM at Lightwoods House in Smethwick to celebrate the exhibition launch. ‘Mitti Di Kushboo’ is open to the public until 29 June 2019 as part of Blast! This Friday 21 June join us at 1PM at the Blast! venue ‘Former Poundland’, for a screening of Camera in the Streets, a documentary about Janine Wiedel’s work photographing West Midlands Industry. The film is followed by a discussion between Janine Wiedel and curator Craig Ashley. . Janine Wiedel’s work has covered issues of social concern since the late 60s, with a focus on groups struggling to survive on the edges of mainstream society. Wiedel was awarded the West Midlands Art Bursary 1978 and spent two years recording the region’s industries, including chain-making in Cradley Heath and Bilston’s steelworks. . Showcasing work by Janine and John Myers, Black Country Living raises pertinent questions for the lives of people living in the Black Country. As a divided Britain contemplates a future outside the EU, how will the changes brought about by Brexit impact Sandwell, here at the heart of the nation? The exhibition is presented in public spaces throughout the Blast!
