Viran

This is who I made this body of work for.
When Viran and his sister Avleen were born it struck me that they might not hear the tales of India we were so familiar with from my grandparents and parents. And that as me and my siblings were born here, they would be even further removed from their Indian origins. So I hope they keep the accompanying book I’m making for this to pass down to future generations.

So I keep coming back to why is it so important for me to record this? In India the way of life is so different, in good and bad ways, but it is different to what I’ve grown up with. And I believe in the importance of history, knowing where you’re from can help to shape you. Until I was older and visited India in my 20s I didn’t really appreciate the sacrifices my grandparents and parents had made for me, so I want Viran and my children to one day read all the stories accompanying these portraits and understand where they came from and how they got to here and now.
I love being British and a Brummie, and equally I love the desi in me. And I want my children to flourish with the best of both cultures. .
