Caravaggio, Supper at Emmaus, 1601
I love the drama in lots of baroque painting, it’s stretch to be part documentary, part mythology, taking old stories and giving them deep expression. The lighting and enigmatic debates being had here, the dimensions of the image, and the expressions in the faces, are part of the inspiration behind another scene in my series “Exiles”, titled “Pay Day” where I bring to life a 60s pub, a forum where men gathered as if on their farms in South Asia, to share advice, get drunk, listen to local music, and remarkably create their own banking system to get around national banks who wouldn’t give proper loans, called “Cooth”. @billster187

Billy Dosanjh will be talking about his photographic series The Exiles an screening his previously unseen Super 8 footage of the Punjab and Sandwell at 6PM at The Red Cow Pub, Smethwick on Tues 18 June. .
